RamBola is the newly announced film from Vishal Chaturvedi, the writer-director of the surprise hit Hanuman Ansh. Presented by Mahaveer Jain Films and produced by Mahaveer Jain, Chaturvedi, Amit Upadhyay and Raghuvendra Singh, the film will chronicle the life, spiritual journey and literary legacy of Mahakavi Goswami Tulsidas, the 16th-century saint-poet best known for Ramcharitmanas, his celebrated Awadhi retelling of the Ramayana. The project continues Chaturvedi’s interest in India’s spiritual traditions following his film on Neem Karoli Baba.
A Bigger Challenge After Hanuman Ansh
The core challenge for RamBola will be bringing the extraordinary life of Tulsidas to the big screen while balancing devotion, spirituality and dramatic storytelling. Chaturvedi’s Hanuman Ansh achieved an extraordinary turnaround through word of mouth despite its tiny reported budget and limited initial release, eventually crossing ₹200 crore in India according to recent trade reports. That success demonstrated the theatrical potential of devotional subjects, but RamBola deals with an even more historically and culturally significant figure whose literary legacy is deeply embedded in Indian culture.
High Expectations From RamBola
The expectations surrounding RamBola are therefore considerably higher than they would have been before Hanuman Ansh. Chaturvedi has now shown that a spiritual subject can become a mainstream theatrical success without conventional star power, creating curiosity about whether he can repeat that phenomenon with Tulsidas. The film is currently in development, with its cast, production schedule and release date yet to be announced.
